FROM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT TO SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

Burgwyn Residential Management Services (“BRMS) and The Rowdy Foundation share a deep passion and competence for providing permanent supportive housing to veterans and families experiencing homelessness. Inspired by the Aspire Program, BRMS created a 501c3 nonprofit, The Rowdy Foundation, to partner in the service provisions at these affordable housing projects. The Rowdy Foundation officially commenced operations in 2019, and the mission of this nonprofit is to fight poverty among individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness into long-term, sustainable housing through a holistic approach that acknowledges trauma and the multidimensional needs of the individual and the community. Tenants of all backgrounds can enter housing quickly and easily; our projects have low-barrier entrance requirements. Once residents are stabilized, they can begin to address some of the underlying causes of their homelessness or past circumstances. The onsite supportive service team helps residents identify their goals through Motivational Interviewing approaches and other creative engagement strategies. The City of Denver has continued to acknowledge and support the positive impact of these services via a City grant for The Fourth Quarter since 2015 and for Ruby Hill since 2021.

AN UNLIKELY RELATIONSHIP

Property management and supportive services are often an unlikely couple. Historically property management and case managers find themselves at odds with each other due to differing goals. Despite this unlikely ‘well-working’ relationship, we feel that BRMS and The Rowdy Foundation have mastered collaborating as a team to uphold the Housing First Model while acknowledging that certain behaviors have natural consequences. Our property managers and case managers meet daily to discuss the best options for our residents. There is mutual respect between these two parties, which allows for advocacy and understanding. There are no surprises on our team; for example, the property manager provides a monthly list to the case manager of residents in need of rental assistance, and the case manager provides tenant counseling to residents that find themselves in violation of the lease.
